How it works

Service lengths follow the Military Manpower Administration: Army and Marine Corps 18 months, Navy 20 months, Air Force 21 months, and social service personnel 21 months.

Service starts at midnight on the enlistment date, so that date counts as day 1. Under Article 160 of the Korean Civil Act, a period in months ends on the day before the matching date in the final month, or on the last day of that month if no matching date exists.

Total days run from the enlistment date through the discharge date. Progress is days served by the reference date divided by total days.

Example

Enlisting in the Army on March 15, 2026 gives a discharge date of September 14, 2027 and 549 total days. On the enlistment day, 1 day is served and D-548 remain.

Enlisting in the Army on August 31, 2026: February 2028 has no 31st, so the discharge date is the last day of that month, February 29, 2028.

Frequently asked questions

How is the discharge date calculated?

Count the service months on the calendar from the enlistment date. Service ends on the day before the same date in the final month. Enlisting in the Army on March 15, 2026 means discharge on September 14, 2027.

What if the enlistment date is the 31st?

If the final month has no matching date, service ends on the last day of that month, following Article 160 of the Korean Civil Act. Enlisting in the Army on August 31, 2026 gives February 29, 2028.

Can the real date be different?

Yes. Time not counted toward service, early discharge, or extensions can change it. The unit or the Military Manpower Administration has the official date.
