Character counter

Use this character counter and word counter to check text that has a length limit, such as a bio, a post, a cover letter, or a message. It shows the character count both with and without spaces, along with words and lines.

Words are counted by splitting on spaces, so the number may differ slightly from other word counters for languages without spaces.

How to use

  1. Paste or type your text into the box.
  2. Read the character counts, word count, and line count.
  3. Edit the text and check the numbers again as needed.

How it works

The tool counts every character in the text to get the total with spaces. It then removes all spaces, tabs, and line breaks and counts again to get the total without spaces. The word count is the number of groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, and the line count is the number of lines separated by line breaks.

Two byte counts are shown. UTF-8 is what the web and most files use: ASCII characters take 1 byte, most accented letters 2, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese characters 3, and emoji 4. The "2 per non-ASCII" count treats ASCII as 1 byte and every other character as 2, the convention used by older Korean systems and SMS limits.

Example

The text "hello world" has 11 characters with spaces, 10 without spaces, 2 words, and 1 line. The text "one two" followed by a line break and "three" has 13 characters with spaces, 11 without spaces, 3 words, and 2 lines.

For "가a", a line break, and one emoji, the UTF-8 count is 9 bytes (3 + 1 + 1 + 4) and the 2-per-non-ASCII count is 6 bytes (2 + 1 + 1 + 2).

Frequently asked questions

Are spaces counted as characters?

Both are shown. Check the count with spaces and the count without spaces.

How are emoji counted?

Counts are per code unit, so one emoji may count as two characters.

Is my text saved anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser only.
